Saint-Joseph-de-la-Rive boasts an important concentration of heritage homes always perfectly ready to bear witness to its history. Although most of these houses are located on rue Félix-Antoine-Savard, several can be found on chemin du Quai, chemin de l'Anse or in the section known as "de la Côte" which juts out, over the village.

Some of the older dwellings seem to date from the latter part of the 18th century but most of Saint-Joseph-de-la-Rive's houses were built during the founding of the village, between 1900 and 1940. Also, their Victorian style and turn of the Century Québec influence contribute to the everlasting "Belle Epoque" atmosphere.

The fact that most of the older structures are well preserved and still retain their traditional elements has prompted the municipality to recognize the efforts put in to highlight these homes by acknowledging and identifying a historical district that holds 40 dwellings of particular interest.

An architectural rarity

"Fretted board wood-shed"

The local versions are distinguishable by an unusual arrangement of boards: they are placed in a herringbone pattern on the vertical joints of the small structure or only on part of its sections.
